All,
In driving some of the neighborhood areas it is very apparent that we have significant damages to many older trees. I saw several areas where the property owners have put these limbs out onto the streets. This only causes more problems. The limbs need to be on your property, behind the curb line and NOT underneath power lines or near existing trees/shrubs.
Brush/Limbs will be taken up as quickly as possible, but it will probably be several weeks before it is all gone. You can help by bundling or bagging the smaller pieces - remember there's no limit on either of those and they get picked up each week. The larger stuff will be picked up with a boom truck. Please don't mix in any plastic bags or other bulk wastes in those piles. In some instances, you may be told that a very large tree trunk or limb must be made smaller. This is a safety issue with the trucks because they can (and have) turned over from trying to load large heavy pieces of wood. If you hire someone to trim your tree limbs, you might want to go ahead and ask how much they will charge to take the trimmings away. The City doesn't own/operate trash trucks any longer and we must rely on our contractor to make the collections. We will continue to monitor our District 3 neighborhoods.
We've had damage in many city parks and those are being cleaned up on a priority basis - anything that could be considered a health/safety hazard first. If you have young children, please accompany them and supervise them at the park so they aren't climbing around on any damaged trees. There are some of the older oaks that have completely toppled over because they already had root damage. To a youngster, it looks like an opportunity to do some serious climbing, but could result in injury.
Lastly, we are aware that with downed power lines, there were damages to some street lights including toppled poles. If you have one in your area, please call it into 817-392-8100 and give them the block number, street name and the nearest cross street if possible. We have been advised, that when light poles went down, the power to them was turned off. Again, lots of damages, less workers and we are trying to do the best we can.
Thanks for being our extra eyes and ears. Sandi
